Alumni Spotlight: Sofia Salerno ‘20

With so many wonderful travel opportunities for LCA students approaching, we thought it’d be a good time to spotlight one of our outstanding LCA graduates: Sofia Salerno. Sofia is a member of the 2020 graduating class and is an avid traveler. Now a third-year student at Loyola University Chicago studying International Business and Information Systems, she has spent both a summer and spring semester abroad. But before she began exploring the world for months at a time, she traveled as a student at Lakewood Catholic Academy.

During her time as an LCA Saint, Sofia participated in numerous travel experiences, each of which deepened her love for travel. While at LCA, she visited New York City to attend student social justice conferences, Atlanta to compete in the national Amazing Shake competition, and even traveled internationally to Ecuador for a service-learning trip. Each of these trips offered unique experiences and exposed Sofia to new cultures, traditions, and people.

One of Sofia’s favorite aspects of travelling is learning about international cuisine. In Ecuador, LCA students learned about traditional farming practices and enjoyed coffee from a neighboring coffee bean farm.

This year, we are thrilled to offer several travel opportunities for current LCA students:

New York City – Performing Arts Experience

This weekend-long trip to New York City is offered to Saints who participated in last year’s Saints Showcase. Students will be immersed in the bustling city, learn about the history and cultural impact of Broadway, and will attend two Broadway shows!

Georgia and Alabama – Racial Justice Immersion Experience

This educational trip immerses students in the history of enslavement, segregation and impacts of the Civil Rights Movement. This trip is open to 7th and 8th grade students, and will take place in early October.

Washington DC – 8th Grade Class Trip

This annual tradition celebrates the graduating 8th grade class. Students enhance their knowledge about US history by visiting National Historic Landmarks, and completing the LCA branches of government challenge as well as the Hunt for the National Treasure in the Smithsonian Museum, all while creating core memories with their classmates.

Pack Your Bags, Saints . . . More travel learning opportunities will be announced this year!
