At Lakewood Catholic Academy, the International Baccalaureate Community Project is more than a final assignment. It’s a defining experience. The culminating service project of a student’s time at LCA, it challenges eighth graders to combine research, service, and action while developing the skills and mindset needed to make a meaningful impact.
For 2025 graduate Sam Coury, that experience became something much bigger.
Now a freshman at St. Edward High School, Sam was recently recognized by the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) as the 2025 Youth in Philanthropy Award recipient, an honor that celebrates young leaders who demonstrate exceptional commitment to serving their communities.
Sam’s service journey began at LCA, where his Community Project focused on volunteering, particularly with The Centers in Cleveland. Through hands-on service, he not only contributed to meaningful community efforts, but also developed a deeper understanding of empathy, responsibility, and leadership.
That foundation has continued to shape his path.
As AFP Greater Cleveland shared in their recognition of Sam, his work reflects “compassion and creativity,” along with “maturity, empathy, and a strong sense of responsibility.” Whether organizing community initiatives, supporting youth programs, or simply stepping in where help is needed, Sam leads with a quiet confidence that has inspired both peers and adults alike.
His impact is a powerful reminder that leadership doesn’t require age—it requires action.
For Sam and his family, the connection back to LCA is clear. His parents, David and Shelly, shared that his Community Project experience was a catalyst, helping him recognize the importance of service and setting him on the path that ultimately led to this award. Sam is enjoying a strong freshman year, competing on the basketball and baseball teams, carrying with him the lessons and habits formed during his time at LCA.
His story reflects what makes the LCA experience so impactful: when students are given the opportunity to explore real-world issues and take meaningful action, they don’t just complete a project, they discover purpose. Sometimes, that purpose grows into something that changes a community. Congratulations, Sam—we are proud of you!
